VGM Gears Up For 2021; Key Members And Freshmen Members Of The 117th Congress

As we roll into the 117th Congress, it is critical that the HME industry looks for new allies and champions. We will be looking to you, our members, for assistance in educating them on our current issues.

VGM pledges to continue to encourage legislation that would improve the reimbursement, decrease regulatory burdens, and improve accessibility for patients for DME, CRT, O&P, and women’s health in 2021.

In coordination with state associations, we are excited to begin scheduling in-district meetings, with new members of Congress in the first half of 2021. There are currently over 60 new House members, 15 Democrats and 45 Republicans and two undecided House races. In the Senate, there are two new Democrats and four new Republicans with two runoff elections in Georgia. Click here to see a list of all current freshmen members of the 117th Congress.

Partnering with state associations, we will begin by looking at HME providers in these particular districts. Relationships are built face-to-face, so we will encourage and assist with setting up an in-district meeting. It is important that these freshmen congressmen and members of key committees are connected to a constituent in the HME world; someone who can educate them on the critical HME issues and needs.

Don’t discount a meeting with a staff member! In most cases, congressional staff knows more about our issues than the member of Congress. Having their support will lead to the congressional members support.

We will prioritize the meeting requests based key committee assignments. Committees of jurisdiction for healthcare are House Energy and Commerce, House Ways and Means, Senate Finance, and Senate H.E.L.P. (Health, Energy, Labor and Pension).

As many of you already know, VGM and AAHomecare have been working with the state associations to have an HME advocate/representative in every district of the country through the GAP (Grassroots Advocacy Program). Click here to visit the GAP website and please sign up to be a GAP advocate.

For many years, the industry has been reactive instead of proactive. We need to establish these relationships now, instead of whenever a need presents itself. It takes a little time to build these important relationships and for one day to bear fruit.

We at VGM take pride in our boots-on-the-ground, grassroots efforts. We hope you will join us on our journey in educating these new members and key committee members and gaining some allies.
