Many of our friends in the HME industry are involved in individual state COVID-19 committees, and they are doing their best to provide a voice for the HME community. In North Carolina, Mary Hooks of Liberty Medical Specialties Inc. is part of the North Carolina Respiratory Board, along with Craig Rae of Penrod Medical Equipment. Craig reports that Mary made recommendations regarding the easing of licensing requirements to address the shortage of respiratory therapists in North Carolina. The BOD approved the recommendations, and less than a week later, this story was on the news. Hopefully, these efforts in North Carolina can be repeated in other states.

Beth Bowen, executive director of ACMESA, says, “ACMESA is fortunate to have Mary’s leadership, as North Carolina was one of the first in the country to act on this concern. We are grateful for the prompt response by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board, under the Directorship of Dr. William Croft, to ensure the safety of our citizens.”
