Clear Vision For The Year 2020

The new year is a time to reflect on the previous year as well as gain a fresh perspective. It’s a time to review the work that was done, and a look at what could have been done differently. It’s also a time for reflecting on celebrations and losses.

This was a year for competitive bidding! Our team was honored to help members during this confusing and taxing time. While there are still many unknowns about the future program, the VGM team looks forward to continuing to assist in that arena in 2020 and beyond.

There was legislative success with the passage of the CRT language, which excludes custom wheelchair accessories from the competitive bid program for 18 months. We will continue to work to ensure CMS follows through on those adjustments.

We streamlined our communication to provide you with the smartest, most up-to-date content that is easily accessible whenever you need it. Our team’s goal is to position your company for success not only today, but well into the future. Getting information to you is a crucial part of that. That means sending news and updates to you as quickly and accurately as possible through our blog and newsletter. If you have not signed up for our blog, please do so here to make sure you get updates as they happen! You’ll also want to make sure you are following us on Facebook and Twitter!

We lost a very good friend in the DME industry, Karyn Estrella, who lost her battle with cancer this summer. Karyn led the New England state association for DME suppliers (HOMES) for over 20 years. Her passion and devotion to members and the industry is greatly missed.

We are also saying farewell to our good friend and colleague, Tom Powers, who served as the Director of Government Relations on the VGM Team. Tom retired on Dec. 31, 2019. Tom will still be with us in a consulting capacity, but we will miss seeing him in the office every day. Tom can still be reached at [email protected]

Looking ahead at 2020, we will continue to work on the passage of DMEPOS legislation such as:

  • H.R. 2771 – Protecting Home Oxygen & Medical Equipment Act
  • H.R. 4945 - Safeguarding Medicare Access to Respiratory Therapy
  • H.R. 1370 and S.562 - Breast Cancer Patient Equity Act
  • H.R. 2408 - Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act

We continue to ask for co-sponsorship of these bills from House legislators and action in the Senate.

In late March or early April, Congress’ attention will be shifting to the democratic caucuses and presidential election. We will work with key committees and legislators to ensure our industry language is included in any must-pass legislation.

Now is not the time to go silent! During this time that we wait for competitive bidding rates and bid winners (known as the Gap Period), we will work on our federal issues while at the same time focusing on state issues back in individual states, tax exemption, MCO overreach, and licensure. At VGM, we look forward to working with state associations to build a stronger tomorrow. Congress is now back in session. Please continue contacting your elected officials! You can easily send a message to your member by visiting www.vgmgov.com.

We hope you will join us in the fight! We look forward to continuing the battle for accessibility and fair reimbursement for quality goods and services.

Cheers to a productive 2020!
